NES QUEST pt. 26: Care package from Rob

In part 22, I mentioned a trade that I had with my old retro game collecting friend Rob, wherein I traded him various PS2 games for two NES games from my wanted list. Earlier this week, I received a package from Rob containing four more NES games from my wanted list.

He explained that he was happy with the extra goodies I included in our last trade and wanted to return the favor. So he used my NES list (which is saved as a Google spreadsheet) and visited a local store that was having a sale– four common NES games for $10. And he was able to knock off four games that are common that I haven’t been able to find yet– Side Pocket, Bad Dudes, World Track Meet and Adventures of Bayou Billy.

Side Pocket was originally an arcade game released in 1986 by Data East, but it was later ported to the NES, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Game Gear and WonderSwan. It’s a straight-forward table pool game that was popular enough to also come out on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console and spawned a handful of sequels.

Also released to the arcades by Data East, Bad Dudes (originally titled Bad Dudes Vs. DragonNinja) was released in 1988. The game is a side-scrolling beat ’em up where the players are set in the role of the titular duo tasked with rescuing “President Ronnie” from ninja kidnappers. It was met with a mixed critical reception, but has become widely known for its introduction cut scene. It spawned a sequel for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Two Crude Dudes.

World Track Meet is a game that I thought I already had, since it’s one of the more common for the console. However, I only had the variant that also contained Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt. I also have Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros and the Super Mario Bros-Duck Hunt cartridge.

Adventures of Bayou Billy has a surprisingly dynamic game play mechanics and story. Most of the game is played in beat em up style. But the game also contains shooting and racing sections. The story follows Billy as he battles through henchmen to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend. I’ve never played the game, but I’m excited to check it out.

This haul brings my collection from 259 to 263 NES games. For the rest of the entries of NES Quest, check them out right here on Retro Chronicle.

  • Really happy to help bud! I really want to see you succeed in the NES quest! Be prepared to get fairly angry at Bayou Billy. I really enjoyed it growing up, but 10 years later its ridiculously hard!

  • Man, I hate Bayou Billy… 🙂 It is a lot harder then I remembered it (Or I’ve just lost my mad video game skills of the late 80’s). Do you have your current NES list posted somewhere? If I have any doubles that you need, I’d be glad to make a trade if you’ve got any doubles I need. I hate putting stuff on ebay…just don’t have the time these days. I’ve got a few SNES games I’m hoping to flip too for NES games I need. It’s weird, I have no emotional attachment to SNES for some reason. I think it was the system that was out in my highschool (non-gaming) days. NES was my childhood, and N64 was a blast in my college days, so those are a little closer to my heart. But I got a great deal on an SNES system recently with 3 boxed games (boxes are in various conditions) that I couldn’t pass up.

    • SNES is one of my favorite consoles in terms of nostalgia. But NES is my bread and butter when it comes to collecting. I’ve never played Bayou Billy, but I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions!

An updated list of my NES collection can be found right here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19uzXcXKJ7gpzFzqOVB5cvHGzIQ9SLsfAVCWdQEPIbcE/pubhtml

      • Wow, that’s quite a collection! And after looking at your list and my doubles, I only have one double that you still need: Paperboy! (I scored 2 in a lot I recently picked up) – so if you have any doubles and want to trade for Paperboy, let me know! I can get you a list of what I currently have…I still need a lot of the common games. I couldn’t find a way to contact you, so if you want to, you can contact me at [email protected] (that’s my email for my blog http://gbnfgroceries.blogspot.com/ – yes, besides video games, and 80’s toys, and boardgames, and vinyl, I also collect vintage packaging…cereal boxes, candy wrappers….fun stuff like that.)
