Today, the Pokemon Company announced a new trailer for an upcoming Pokemon-Tekken crossover called “Pokken,” which is just an awesome name for a Pokemon-Tekken collaboration. The game will be released in arcades in Japan in 2015.
In the reveal trailer, two fighting-type Pokémon, Lucario and Machamp battle each other in a grassy terrain. It would be reasonable to expect that this game will include only fighting-type Pokémon, considering there are 46 fighting-type Pokémon total (or 6.2 percent of all Pokémon). The last Tekken game, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 included 60 characters.
Similar to the Tekken series, Pokken is a two-player arcade fighter. It is likely that the players will be able to interact with the level and that some type of special “rage mode” will be involved.
To me, much of the fun of the Pokemon series revolves around the elemental strategy of the Pokemon. So making a game about one type of Pokemon feels like removing an important dynamic from a winning formula. But then again, there are over 30 duel-type fighting Pokemon, which might play a major role in the game’s battle mechanics.
Pokken Tournament seems like a fun idea for a game, but it probably isn’t the Pokemon game fans were expecting. Fans have been begging for a Pokemon MMO or at least a home console RPG like Gale of Darkness.
The crossover feels similar to the upcoming crossover of the Legend of Zelda and Dynasty Warriors. Essentially, Nintendo threw Zelda characters into a Dynasty Warriors game. And here, the same idea seems to be applied. Hopefully, Nintendo can make the game more imaginative and engaging that a simple Tekken game, featuring Pokemon characters.
